Cattle

Cattle

Cattle convert the forage from grasslands, which is not suitable for human consumption, into high-quality foodstuffs, namely milk and meat. Milk shows the best efficiency in the conversion of vegetable energy and protein. Organic cattle farmers have the opportunity to steward and conserve valuable agro-ecosystems through pasture-based, low-input organic production systems, in an ethological way. Organic cattle production systems are challenged with reducing the adverse environmental impacts, particularly the carbon footprint of the sector.

Fertility and health are the main issues for organic dairy cows, whilst internal parasites are among the most important problems of grazing young cattle. In organic cattle husbandry, appropriate herd and pasture management, as well as preventive measures for parasite regulation are prioritised.

On this page, you find tools specific to meat and dairy cattle.
